Bank Holiday Treat @ Llandegfedd and Forest Farm

Some fantastic opportunities this weekend for photography. When the weather is nice, you just have so many options! Especially when spring decides to kick into action at the same time. Butterflies this weekend; Small Tortoiseshell, Speckled Wood, Brimstone, Peacock and Orange Tip! I'm sure I saw more than that but that was all I managed to properly ID. I finally caught up with that Little Bunting at Forest Farm in Cardiff before it decided to migrate (if it does migrate..) And then spent the rest of the weekend at Llandegfedd where we had some great Birds but not the best opportunities to photograph them due to it being the busiest I've EVER seen it. It was so busy that every inch of grass around the car park was also taken up by cars and the road going up past the car park had lots more cars parked. With the cars came people and many Dogs which were causing even more problems. Dogs being Dogs naturally want to jump in the water and they were doing so all over the Res and with only 2 people working onsite, you can imagine the trouble they were having. A women managed to lock herself in the North toilets due to the lock being broken and we also had young adults turn up with blow up rafts at the North end expecting to be able to just go out on the water. If it wasn't for me being present, Welsh Water would have had a much larger Job on their hands! The amount of times I had to direct the public where to go because of the lack of signs was ridiculous and to top it off I had to deal with a fight between a local Man and a fisherman because the fisherman wasn't happy with the family for walking the wrong way (through no fault of their own) and the Man wasn't happy with being told what to do (Even though the fisherman was correct as they shouldn't have been walking that way as it's for permit holders only).

What a mess, for me, the experience of Llandegfedd has completely changed. It is no longer that place of peace and tranquility and soon, the wildlife will reflect upon the damage that we will inevitably bring. Some good can come from the public having access to the North end and by all means I would hate to deprive people from such a gem of a place but, the negatives will always outweigh the positives in this situation.

Welsh Water have no intensions of hiring more staff from what I've been told and even though the rangers onsite totally agree with what I'm saying, the decision comes from above and they have decided to make Llandegfedd a Public Park. We'll see how well that goes for them.

While all this was going on, an Osprey did arrive at Llandegfedd but took one look at the activity and decided to power right through and didn't even stop for a rest. An Avocet was also spotted today right out in the middle swimming with the Gulls and that is where it stayed all day haven been flushed a few times by passing boats. The Garganey Ducks only stayed for the day of the 5th and were nowhere to be seen the next day.

Other Migrants in the form of Wheatear, Swallows and House Martins all starting making their appearances and it was the wildlife that yet again, saved my day.

Llandegfedd Extra

Stoping off at Llandegfedd after a day of Birding with my good friend Paul Joy and straight away, arrived at North Fishermans Car Park to be greeted by lots of Dogs and screaming kids. Not a good start and the trip got worse as we followed the path to Green Pool hide only to find a very injured Black Swan! The poor bird has been here at Llandegfedd for a long time now so to see it in such a state after seeing it feeding fine just the other day was really sad. After a few calls, we finally got hold of Newport Swan Rescue centre and they got out to us as soon as possible where a guy called Peter (who used to be chairmen of Gwent Ornithology Society) came to collect the bird. The poor Black Swan looked like it had broken its leg somehow and I really hope that it wasn't Dogs to blame for this because if I find out it is, I will be forming a big complaint to add to the list of other things I could complain about, like the littering and Dog poo that is already causing problems.

In other news, I found yet another beetle! This time it was a Burying Beetle! also known as a Sexton Beetle! These beetles are truly incredible creatures that require small dead animals to survive. Upon finding a dead bird or mouse, the Burying Beetle will protect that carcass like it was its own child, it does this until a female arrives where it will then do it's business and she will lay it's eggs in the dead animal, the beetle then has to bury that animal so that it can last long enough for the eggs to hatch and the larvae will then have a meal to feed on. This beetle is probably having a field day with all the dead animals I've been finding out Llandegfedd lately... I'm just glad that the Black Swan isn't one of them.

South Sebastopol & First Swallow!

On a more positive note! My first Swallow was spotted on home terf which is such a reward! Followed by 2 others in Newinn while coming home from a short 30 minutes at Llandegfedd. Most of my day however was spent on the Canal where I got to meet a few lovely people which happened to be enjoying the Toads which were in full spring swing today! Over 20 Chiffchaffs were singing today in this area, I also saw 8 Jays showing very different behaviour than their usual winter flocks. I assume this time of year they will become more aggressive to each other as they pair up to breed. Our local Nuthatch is defending his patch well while protecting what looks like a hole with the lady already sitting on eggs! Either that or he is yet to actually find a female because no other bird was sighted but he didn't enter the hole, he just protected it.

Was unfortunate to find what looked like a smooth newt that had been run over. I'd strongly recommend no late night bike rides along the canal this time of year. You'll also find a lot of Toads along with path in the night time.

Llandegfedd Reservoir Concerns?

Throughout the years of development 2013/14 of the new Visitors Centre, I've had my worries about the future of Llandegfedd and the general direction it is inevitably going in. I worry because the North end of the Res has always been shut off from the general public resulting in it being a major hotspot for wildlife. This includes many Red Listed species of Bird and even plants that require a rich secluded spot like Llandegfedd to thrive. I also worry because over 200+ walkers with their Dogs have since visited Llandegfedd venturing out to explore their new pathways but the problem is, there are no bins what so ever, no dog bins, no signs and no fencing to prevent people from straying away from the path. There are sections of the North end that were meant to be totally cut off and out of bounds but currently there are no barriers to prevent Dogs or people walking straight into them. Owners of Llandegfedd really haven't thought things through! They just wanted to open it up by the deadline. This isn't acceptable.

As you can see in the photos below, it also looks like they are going to build a dock at the north end for the boats. Though the dock itself may make for better birding, the activity is another worry. As you can see in the pictures below, there are no fences in the meadows what so ever and soon, these fields will be covered in wild flowers.

Llandegfedd Reservoir Visitors Centre Opening Day!

April is one of my favourite months so expect lots of activity here this month! Spring is pretty much already here with many of our native Birds already nesting and some with chicks already! Like our Mallard Ducks! Well, that said, today is also the opening of the new Llandegfedd Visitors Centre! I'll post up photo's as soon as I get a chance to go over there. (I plan on going straight after work today).

Biomusicology News

Some are probably wondering what Bio-musicology actually is as I have it written on all my cards that I hand out. I thought i'd give you a quick explanation just incase you are one of those people.

Bio-musicology is a broad term used for someone who studies musical elements within the animal kingdom. Not just vocalisation from their mouths, but sounds made in other various ways, usually very unique to an individual species: much like this Club-winged Manakin Bird in the video below that actually vibrates the wings so fast it produces that amazing sound. This type of sound producing is simular to Crickets, which brings me on to something quite incredible. Jim Wilson claims that his recording of crickets slowed down actually sounds like a choir and well, listening to the recording it really does sound like a choir! How true this is regarding his editing methods I'm not entirely sure but below that recording i've posted my own of a Blackcap which sounds incredibly like Monkies in a rainforest! It resembles more the sounds you actually hear in rainforests and I had to ask myself, why? The reason why the lower pitched song sounds like birds from the rainforest is simple because the birds in places like the Amazon don't have to contend with human environmental sounds, meaning that they can sing at lower pitches without disturbance. It's a known fact that Blackbirds have raised their volume in towns and cities to contend with traffic noise and this resulted also in a raise of pitch.

Tom Waits (on Jim Wilson): "Wilson, he's always playing with time. I heard a recording recently of crickets slowed way down. It sounds like a choir, it sounds like angel music. Something sparkling, celestial with full harmony and bass parts - you wouldn't believe it. It's like a sweeping chorus of heaven, and it's just slowed down, they didn't manipulate the tape at all. So I think when Wilson slows people down, it gives you a chance to watch them moving through space. And there's something to be said for slowing down the world." This is an insight to the melodic tunes of a Blackcap brought down to a level that is more relatable to the Human ear. All birds have different Qualities, this bird favours more melodic tunes than Rhythmic percussion however this recording does point out some interest things like- the distant bird in the background copies the sounds of this Blackcap almost perfectly. Something that would have been missed when listening to it at full speed/pitch.

RSPB Shocked at M4 Relief Road Black Route

Words do not describe how disappointed I am with this result. All I can hope for now is our Government to change in the next election and maybe, just maybe! there is some hope in this situation. Yet another selfish decision made for the good of first world people. In other news, I spent an hour re-editing some photos that I missed in my Raw collection so here are some from last year and this year from various places like Llandegfedd (last year) and Forest Farm (This Month)

Clocks Forward!

You've no idea how great having the clocks move forward was for me.. For months now the weather has been brilliant while I've been sat in work... and on the weekends the heavens would open lol. Having an extra hour in the evening really does make all the difference! I can now go out straight after work and have 2-3 hours left of light which is all I really need to keep me happy.

Yesterday I had my first official driving lesson too! Which went fantastically well.. I'm already out on the roads so please watched out! I'm still learning that is for sure lol. In all the hype around the Great Grey Shrike the last couple weeks, I missed the opportunity to show you a few other photos so here are a few textured photos below and also another Folly Tower photo from yet another angle in the Gwent Valle

Great Grey Shrike, Blaenserchan (Stollen my blog)

On the chance that the Bird will get used to my presence, I went straight up after work. To my disappointment, the Bird still doesn't like me. haha! No sun out today which I guess isn't such a bad thing with a light coloured Bird like this.

Great Grey Shrike, Blaenserchan

My second trip up Blaenserchan to see the Great Grey Shrike and it showed well despite keeping its distance. I botched my only good opportunity to get a good photograph as I was doing a short video of it prior to the bird flying straight at me. I simply couldn't change the settings quick enough! grrrr. Ahh well, what a Bird! :D Yet another Beetle found on this trip but this time it was a large leaf beetle called a Blood-Nosed Beetle! Usually see them in the summer so this is another early record. Blood-Nosed Beetles get their name from the blood they excrete from their mouths when threatened: A method that works on small mammals.
